چکیده

A numerical scheme is proposed to generate a microstructure of a martensitic material when subjected to arbitrary boundary conditions. The deformation gradient is decomposed multiplicatively into an elastic strain and a transformation strain. The elastic part ensures compatibility between the (conforming) finite elements. A global energy minimization scheme similar to Genetic Algorithms, yet supplemented by line searches Kees, vul aan a.j.b., yields energy minimizing microstructures.

Finite element analysis of a class of stress-free martensitic microstructures

This work is concerned with the finite element approximation of a class of stress-free martensitic microstructures modeled by multi-well energy minimization. Finite element energy-minimizing sequences are first constructed to obtain bounds on the minimum energy over all admissible finite element deformations. A series of error estimates are then derived for finite element energy minimizers.

Effect of the Primary Microstructures during Training Producers on TWSME in NiTi Alloys (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The influence of the martensitic, martensitic+austenitic and austenitic structures in bending training on two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) in Ni-50.8 at %Ti and Ni-49.9 at %Ti alloys was studied. In addition of the primary structure, the effect of pre-strain, plastic strain, training cycle and training temperature on the TWSME was investigated. The prepared samples were trained in martensiti...

A fast algorithm for the simulation of polycrystalline misfits. II. Martensitic transformations in three space dimensions

We present a fast numerical method for the simulation of martensitic transformations in three-dimensional polycrystals. To produce the relevant overall elastic energy arising from given boundary conditions, this method proceeds by reducing the corresponding non-convex minimization problem to minimization of a certain quadratic form—over the set of arrays of transformation strains which are comp...

A regularized mesh transformation method for the computation of crystalline microstructures

Since the finite element approximations of microstructures are strongly mesh dependent, the use of the mesh transformation method based on the energy minimizing principle is considered a natural approach in the finite element computation of microstructures. However, without a control on the mesh quality, the mesh can become increasingly irregular in the process of energy minimization and thus j...

The Simply Laminated Microstructure in Martensitic Crystals That Undergo a Cubic to Orthorhombic Phase Transformation

We study simply laminated microstructures of a martensitic crystal capable of undergoing a cubic to orthorhombic transformation of type P ! P 0 . The free energy density modeling such a crystal is minimized on six energy wells that are pairwise rank-one connected. We consider the energy minimization problem with Dirichlet boundary data compatible with an arbitrary but xed simple laminate. We rs...
